MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES

“Learning a foreign language is a liberation from insularity and provides an opening to other cultures. A high-quality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. The teaching should enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. It should also provide opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking and read great literature in the original language. Language teaching should provide the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries.” (Dfe 2013).

  • To provide opportunities for children to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking and read great literature in the original language.
  • To provide a strong foundation for learning further languages equipping them to study or work in other countries.

DELIVERY AT KINGSTHORNE

Throughout Kingsthorne, we aim to deliver a modern foreign language curriculum that is embedded through discreet French lessons. Having discreet lessons means that the children are able to develop depth in their knowledge and skills over each French unit of work.  The modern foreign language curriculum is delivered through Rigolo, providing cross curricular links to other subjects which provides children with an immersive experience. These skills are regularly revisited and embedded through following the Rigolo scheme of work throughout the whole of KS2. KS1 children will be introduced to Modern Foreign Languages through exploring other languages informally when appropriate.
